Manizales was founded on October 12, 1849 on a high ridge of the central Andes Mountains. It was founded by “The Expedition of 20,” a legendary group of pioneers who came from Neira and Salamina. It was named after a gray, peanut-shaped rock called “mani,” and later referred to as a “gran manizal,” due to the profusion of the material.
In the early days of the silver screen from 1914 and onwards, Manizales was regaled with the Tango Shows of Buenos Aires. A culture that thrives on passion and romance, it was love at first sight. Many locals will tell you stories about growing up listening to Tango, Milonga and Vals on the record players of their parents and grandparents.
Somewhere between the decades of 1960 and 1970, locals became involved in the Argentinian Dances, even inventing their own Empirical (or natural/invented) form of expression. Today in Manizales tango is danced in two different schools of belief. One which follows the original movements and styles invented in the 60’s/70’s, and the other which follows standard International methodology common to places like Buenos Aires, Rome, Berlin and New York.
Manizales is home to a national airport called La Nubia, however we advise our visitors to fly into Pereira or Armenia for the best experience. If the weather is rainy the airport can be closed due to low visibility and other limiting factors.
Taxis and busses are the primary form of public transportation. We also offer private car transportation options for your comfort. Contact us for pricing and availability. Note: When you purchase the full festival package your transportation is included.
With cool spring weather and university culture, Manizales is famous for its love and dedication to art and culture. Every year visitors book months in advance to attend either the Feria de Manizales, in January, or the International Theater Festival in September - two of the oldest and most famous fair/festivals of their type in Latin America.
Throughout the year residents enjoy a steady programming of art exhibitions, concerts, poetry readings, dance festivals and special events. Fundadores Theater is famous for its acoustic quality and brings in many important events and celebrities.
Feria de Manizales and the International Coffee Queen Pageant
The biggest event of the year is the Feria de Manizales, with more than 50 years of yearly celebrations. For the best of Colombian traditions and parties, it also features the International Coffee Queen Pageant.
In 2020, more than 20 different countries which either export or import coffee, participated. During the Feria week, participants went on fan trips to the mountains and local municipalities, competed in a swimsuit, coffee tasting/preparation and evening wear categories, for the title of International Coffee Queen. The winner in 2020 was Iris Guerra, Miss El Salvador.
